Worker Injured at Pepsi-Cola Plant

An Oldsmar man was seriously injured while working at a Pepsi-Cola plant this weekend. The accident occurred at around 11:30 am Sunday, August 29th. The Tampa plant is located on North 30th St near the University of South Florida.

As reported by Tampa police, Christian Lee Vance, 39, was cleaning a conveyor belt when tragedy struck. When his coworkers heard him screaming and saw his leg crushed in the conveyor rail system, they called 911. The fire department’s heavy rescue team was sent to the plant. The team worked for almost 90 minutes to free Vance’s leg.

Vance was then airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Police reported his injuries as serious but not life-threatening.

However, this is not the Tampa Pepsi plant’s first serious accident. This past March, two men were crushed by a mechanical lift. The men were contractors doing maintenance work when the lift fell from about 20 feet above. One of the men was killed and the other was seriously injured.

The federal Occupation Safety & Health Administration was notified.
