Passengers Facing Drug Charges Following St. Petersburg Car Accident

Two passengers involved in a St. Petersburg car accident are facing criminal charges following a local crash resulting in their vehicle being overturned.

Wayne Owen, 45, was operating a 2004 Durango on the southbound ramp of I-275 for Fourth Street when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to a rest along the ramp. The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on Friday, June 25, 2010.

Owen and his passenger, 44-year old Tonya Wimbley of St. Petersburg, apparently attempted to leave the scene of the accident but were detained by local citizens who encouraged them to wait for authorities to arrive. Florida Highway Patrol troopers eventually discovered a large quantity of cash inside the vehicle, as well as an undisclosed quantity of marijuana.

Both Owen and Wimbley were charged with possession of marijuana and taken into custody.
